Central Coast Local Health District opened expanded free mental health intake slots on July 1 at its Gosford base.
Visitor numbers along the Gosford to Terrigal beach path rose 18 percent in the past year, according to council path counters, and local GPs report more patients citing work and family pressure after the school holidays. The timing aligns with a national push for earlier intervention before issues reach hospital emergency departments.
Two established entry points sit within easy reach. The first operates from the Community Health Centre on Holden Street in Gosford, where residents can book a 45-minute assessment with a mental health clinician without charge. The second runs through the Avoca Beach Surf Life Saving Club, which hosts weekly group sessions on stress management techniques every Tuesday evening from 6 pm, funded by the Central Coast Council and open to anyone over 16.
Phone lines at the Holden Street centre handle 220 calls a week on average, with most callers offered an appointment inside five working days. Data released last month by the district showed that 68 percent of people who used these free pathways in 2025 avoided escalation to paid private care. Walk-ins are accepted at Gosford on weekday mornings, though staff advise phoning first to confirm wait times.
Residents near Tuggerah Lake can start with a short cycle to the same Holden Street site or join the Avoca sessions by registering at the club office on The Esplanade. Both locations accept self-referrals and do not require a Medicare card for the initial contact.
Call 4320 1234 between 8 am and 5 pm to book at Holden Street or arrive at Avoca Beach club rooms on a Tuesday to join the next available group. Staff at either site can also link callers to Bouddi National Park walking programs run by volunteer guides if outdoor movement forms part of a personal plan.
