Discover the variety of classes and programs available at Central Coast council facilities to boost your physical and mental wellbeing

Over 500 group exercise classes are held weekly at council-run facilities across the Central Coast, providing residents with numerous opportunities to engage in physical activity and socialize with their community.
The importance of community fitness events and group exercise classes cannot be overstated, particularly during periods of extreme weather. With Sydney experiencing its hottest June since 1859, outdoor exercise may become increasingly challenging, making indoor group classes an attractive alternative. Furthermore, the benefits of group exercise extend beyond physical health, as they also provide a sense of belonging and connection, which is essential for mental wellbeing.
In the Central Coast, residents can access a wide range of group exercise classes at council-run facilities, including the Gosford City Council's Erina Ice Arena, the Peninsula Leisure Centre in Woy Woy, and the Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College. For example, the Avoca Surf Lifesaving Club offers fitness classes, while the Terrigal Surf Club provides yoga and Pilates sessions. Additionally, the Bouddi National Park offers guided hikes and outdoor fitness classes, allowing participants to connect with nature while improving their physical health.
According to data from the Central Coast Council, the most popular group exercise classes are yoga, Pilates, and aerobics, with over 200 classes held weekly. The council also offers specialized programs, such as the 50-plus fitness program, which provides exercise classes tailored to the needs of older adults. The cost of attending these classes varies, with some facilities offering classes for as low as $5 per session, while others may charge up to $15. For instance, the Gosford City Council offers a 10-class pass for $100, which works out to $10 per class.
A recent survey conducted by the Central Coast Council found that 75% of participants in group exercise classes reported an improvement in their mental health, while 80% reported an improvement in their physical health. These statistics demonstrate the effectiveness of group exercise classes in promoting overall wellbeing. With the next semester of classes commencing on August 1, residents are encouraged to explore the variety of programs available and find a class that suits their interests and fitness level.
