A streak of unseasonably warm mornings has helped set the stage for a new wellness trend: outdoor group fitness is surging in popularity across the Central Coast. This July, sunrise yoga classes on Terrigal’s foreshore are selling out, while new hiking collectives and run clubs report record sign-ups at Bouddi National Park and along the Tuggerah Lake cycleway.

Interest in outdoor fitness isn’t new, but the recent spike comes as Central Coast residents search for alternatives to crowded gyms. The June heatwave—Sydney’s warmest winter month on record since 1859—has created ideal conditions for exercising outside. Residents say they’re drawn by the combination of mild weather, ocean views, and a sense of connection that’s hard to replicate indoors. This craving for community comes at a time when many locals report increased work and life stress and are seeking both social and physical outlets.

From Terrigal Sands to Bouddi Bush Trails

The Central Coast now boasts an expanding mosaic of outdoor fitness programs spread from Gosford’s waterfront to Avoca Beach. Every Tuesday and Thursday, Terrigal Beach turns into an open-air studio with Flow Haven Yoga hosting sunrise classes at 6:15am near the Skillion. Classes, which launched last summer, now routinely attract 40 to 50 participants—double last year’s attendance—according to event listings. In Bouddi National Park, Coast Tracks has introduced twice-weekly group hikes departing from Putty Beach car park, designed for beginners as well as experienced bushwalkers. Tuggerah Lake’s 12km shared pathway now hosts a monthly cycle and stretch event run by Coasties on Bikes, who have seen membership rise by nearly a third in 2026.

Gyms like Central Coast Fitness on Mann Street in Gosford have responded with outdoor bootcamps in Kibble Park and pop-up classes at Memorial Park, aiming to reach both seasoned locals and newcomers. Meanwhile, surf lifesaving clubs in Avoca and Terrigal are adjusting their training schedules for open sessions on weekends—attracting those wanting both a workout and water safety skills.

Rising Numbers and Accessible Options

Figures from Central Coast Council show a 27% increase in outdoor exercise permit applications this year compared to 2025. Weekly free events like parkrun at The Entrance have swelled to over 220 participants each Saturday. Flow Haven Yoga’s pay-as-you-feel model keeps classes accessible, with suggested donations of $10—less than half the average studio drop-in rate. Coasties on Bikes reports that more than 100 cyclists joined the June event around Tuggerah Lake, up from an average 70 per month last year. Equipment hire suppliers say demand for paddle boards and bikes along the esplanade in Wamberal and Ettalong has spiked 15% this winter.

What’s attracting new faces? Residents cite the social aspect, affordability, and the natural setting as major drawcards. Mobile registration and community Facebook groups have also made joining as easy as turning up with a bottle of water.

With more mild weather forecast into August, organisers expect numbers to keep climbing, especially as school holidays bring families to the region. Looking to jump in? Check local listings for events at Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club or Gosford Waterfront. For those new to exercise, start with low-intensity options like yoga or a guided lakeside walk before tackling a Bouddi trail run. As always, consult a local medical professional if you have health concerns before starting a new activity—then grab a mat or pair of runners and find your spot under the sky.
