With the winter sports season barrelling toward its climax, youth teams across the Central Coast are locking in playoff positions as July’s school holiday break gives way to finals fever. Local netball, rugby league and soccer competitions are all entering their business end, with under-16 and under-18 sides from Gosford, Erina and Terrigal still alive in title hunts that will be decided by early September.
Netball heats up at Gosford courts
The Central Coast Netball Association’s junior grand finals are scheduled for August 23 at the Adcock Park courts in Gosford, with eight age divisions still in contention. The under-16 A-grade ladder shows a three-way tussle between Terrigal Netball Club, Ourimbah and Woy Woy after last weekend’s round, the tightest race in five years, according to association officials. Clubs have been running extra training sessions through the July school holidays, mindful that several senior selectors will be scouting the finals for next year’s opens-grade squads.
Netball NSW runs its annual Central Coast development day at the same venue on August 10, a pathway that has previously produced State Under-19 representatives from the region. Last year’s under-16 grand final drew a crowd of more than 400, a record for a junior fixture at Adcock Park.
Soccer semi-finals approach on the Peninsula
In football, the Central Coast Football junior premier leagues enter the semi-final phase from August 9, hosted at the Pluim Park complex in Lisarow. The under-18 boys division features Kincumber Roosters, who have won nine of their 12 matches, against a resurgent East Gosford side that has not lost since June 20. Under-14 girls teams from Umina and Bateau Bay are also in the mix, with the grand final set for August 30 at Pluim Park’s main field.
Central Coast Football’s technical director said the region’s representative programs have drawn interest from A-League scouts in recent seasons, particularly from the Central Coast Mariners youth academy, which routinely monitors local finals performances. A development squad trial session is scheduled for September 5 at the Mingara Athletics Track in Tumbi Umbi.
Rugby league’s Central Coast Division Junior Rugby League will hold its grand final day at Morrie Breen Oval in Kanwal on August 31, with under-16 and under-18 grand finals capping the season. The local competition has grown by two clubs since 2024, reflecting a sustained interest across the region despite broader participation trends in contact sport. Several players from last year’s under-16 grand final have progressed into the Harold Matthews Cup pathway with the Manly Sea Eagles and Newcastle Knights feeder programs.
For families and spectators, the finals schedule means a busy August. The three main venues, Adcock Park, Pluim Park and Morrie Breen Oval, will each host junior finals on consecutive weekends, with entry free for children under 12. Clubs advise arriving early for the later rounds, as car parking at Pluim Park fills quickly for double-header sessions.
The next two weeks will clarify the draw for each code as regular seasons wrap up. Coaches interviewed after recent matches described the current crop of under-16 talent as one of the most balanced in recent memory, with no runaway favourite in any of the four major junior sports. That, they said, should make the coming finals the most competitive in half a decade.
