Central Coast's Coastal Therapy Trails Set It Apart From Cities Worldwide
The region's fusion of mental health support with ocean access and community trails gives residents options rarely found in dense urban centres elsewhere.
How we reported this

Central Coast residents can now book free guided walks that combine therapy with beach access at two dedicated sites, a setup unmatched in most global cities where indoor clinics dominate.
The timing aligns with rising demand after winter isolation reports showed a 22 percent jump in local helpline calls between May and June this year. National data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare already flagged coastal areas as under-served for outdoor mental health options, yet Central Coast programs have expanded while others stalled.
Named sites deliver practical access
Walks start from the Central Coast Wellness Trail entrance on The Esplanade in Terrigal and from the Mindful Shores drop-in at Avoca Beach Reserve on Avoca Drive. Both run daily at 7am and 5pm, run by the local Central Coast Mental Health Network in partnership with Surf Life Saving Central Coast. Participants receive a 45-minute session led by registered counsellors before optional group debriefs at nearby cafes.
These locations sit within a 15-minute drive of most northern suburbs and link directly to existing walking paths that avoid traffic, unlike the appointment-only models common in Melbourne or London clinics.
Numbers show steady uptake
Since the trails opened on 1 March 2025, more than 4,200 bookings have been recorded, with repeat users making up 61 percent of attendees. A $15 optional donation covers materials, though no one is turned away. Early internal reviews from the network indicate average anxiety scores dropped 18 points on standard scales after four sessions.
Anyone can check availability through the network's site or by calling 02 4323 8900. Slots fill fastest on weekends, so weekday mornings remain the easiest entry for new participants looking to try the format.
