The Central Coast has a humid temperate climate very similar to Sydney's, with the coastal orientation providing oceanic moderation on the eastern beaches while the Gosford basin and the Wyong corridor experience slightly more extreme temperature range due to the reduced marine influence. The Tuggerah Lakes and Lake Macquarie (on the northern boundary) create local weather effects including morning fog in winter and afternoon sea breezes that moderate summer heat in the lake-adjacent suburbs.
Summer (December to February), Central Coast summers are warm (average January maximums 26 to 28°C on the coast, 28 to 30°C inland toward Gosford) with moderate humidity and afternoon sea breezes from the south-east that moderate the coastal beach suburbs. The surf beaches (Terrigal, Avoca, Bateau Bay, The Entrance ocean side) are at their most popular. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer on the western side of the ranges.
Autumn (March to May), Central Coast autumn is pleasant and ideal for the coastal walking (the Bouddi Coastal Walk, the Brisbane Water National Park walks) with the ocean temperature remaining warm (around 22°C in April) and the crowds reducing from the summer peak. April is often the finest month for the Terrigal and Avoca beach suburb walks.
Winter (June to August), the Central Coast winter is mild (average July maximums 16 to 17°C, overnight minimums 7 to 9°C) and the coastal beach suburbs are often the warmest in winter due to the ocean's heat retention. The Gosford valley is cooler and sometimes foggier than the coastal strip in winter. June to September is peak whale watching season off the Central Coast with humpback whales migrating north.
Spring (September to November), Central Coast spring is excellent: the wildflower season in the Bouddi and Brisbane Water national parks (September and October), the return of surf season, and the warming temperatures make spring one of the finest times to be on the Central Coast. October and November (20 to 24°C) are ideal for outdoor activity with smaller crowds than the summer school holiday peak.
